WASHINGTON, Conn. — An armed man wearing a full face ski mask robbed the National Iron Bank branch on Bee Brook Road on Thursday afternoon, police said. A man police described as about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a thin build entered the bank in the Washington Mews shopping plaza between routes 47 and 109 at about 3:40 p.m. He displayed a handgun before fleeing out the back door in an unknown direction, police said.

AMHERST, N.Y. (AP) — Hasheem Thabeet had 21 points and 18 rebounds, Jeff Adrien added 18 points, and No. 2 Connecticut survived a big scare, holding off Buffalo 66-64 on Thursday night.

The Bulls (3-3) nearly upset then-No. 2 Pittsburgh at Alumni Arena two years ago, losing 70-67 after leading by 10 points with 14 minutes left. A repeat performance seemed unlikely against the Huskies (8-0), who won their first seven games by an average of 24 points.

Rotten eggs

America has spent untold billions over the years to curb sulfur pollution. The expense is said to produce air-quality and public-health benefits worth well in excess of the staggering cost, even though the lives allegedly saved and the misery purportedly avoided are purely statistical.

Open bidding benefits all

Whom a school board member serves often is a matter of personal preference. Most feel they're serving the children, wresting as much money from taxpayers as they can in a quest to deliver the best possible education. Some view themselves as servants of the taxpayer, providing the best possible education for the fewest dollars. Either perspective is defensible.

Cut border guards a break

In February 2005, Border Patrol agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean opened fire in Fabens, Texas, on a fleeing drug smuggler they believed was armed. Though wounded, the suspect escaped. Aware of the lack of political and judicial resolve against illegal immigration and drug smuggling, the agents tried to cover up the shooting. They were tried and found guilty on several counts; prosecutors gave the smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, immunity to testify against the agents. Mr. Ramos was sentenced to 11 years in prison; Mr. Compean, 12.
