Dr Sambo Urges Urgent Action to Boost Research for Better Health Outcomes

Bamako, 19 November 2008 -- WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Luis Sambo, says countries should take urgent action to boost research for heath in order to bring about better health outcomes for their people. ”

We must take urgent action to give research and innovation their rightful place if we are to overcome the great health challenges of our times, notably the challenges related to improvements sent out in the Millennium Development Goals”, Dr Sambo said on Wednesday at end of the Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health which took place in Bamako, Mali. read more


Malian President Opens Global Ministerial Forum, Calls for More Investment in Research

Bamako, 17 November 2008 -- Malian President Amadou Toumani Toure  says Africa should invest  in scientific research and technological innovation  as experience in both developed and developing countries shows  that this is key to ensuring the health, political and  economic  future of people.

Africa  needs ”a culture of research for health … and should be committed to the processes of science and technology”,  President Toure said  as he opened the Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health which began on Monday  in Bamako, the Malian capital. read more


WHO Calls on Govts to Prioritize Research for Health
Bamako, 17 November 2008 -- The World Health Organization has called on governments to prioritize health research and echoed a proposal by the Commission on Social Determinants of Health for the inclusion of health in the policies of all government ministries and departments.

The call was made by WHO Director-General, Dr Margaret Chan, in a statement to the Global Ministerial Forum on Research for Health Research which opened on Monday in Bamako, Mali. read more
