£1.2 Million Silent Cinema Complex opened at the
Ulster Folk & Transport Museum

A major new exhibit complex built around a 1920s Silent Cinema was opened on 13th June at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Cultra, by the Culture Minister Edwin Poots MLA. The £1.2 million project features the cinema from Gilford, County Down, and includes a draper’s shop, photographer’s studio, hardware store and period tea rooms.

At the opening ceremony held in the Ballycultra town area the Minister paid tribute to the work of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum as a major tourist attraction and a centre for learning about the past.

Complete with jangling piano accompaniment and films featuring famous stars of the silent screen like Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton, the experience of an authentic trip to the ‘pictures’ in the 1920s is sure to cause as much of a stir with visitors today as it did almost 100 years ago.
