Lismore Festival of Travel Writing to follow ‘ Silk Road’

IMMRAMA, the Lismore Festival of Travel Writing, will be held in the Co Waterford heritage town on Friday-Sunday, June 15-17 with the Silk Road as this year’s festival theme.

IMRAMMA will include guest presentations by Chinese writer Jung Chang and her historian husband Jon Halliday on June 16.

Ms Chang is the best-selling author of Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China – an award-winning family memoir first published in the early 1990s and since translated in to 30 languages with over 10 million copies sold. It offers a first insight to life under the Chinese Communist party.

For her follow-up, Jung Chang combined with her husband to write Mao: the Unknown Story, an 800+ page record of the 27 year regime of Chairman Mao.

Travel writer, film maker and photographer Nick Danziger will open IMMRAMA on June 15. Danziger spent his formative years in Monaco and Switzerland with his American father and English mother. At the age of 13, he travelled to Paris where he embarked on a professional career selling sketches to people. He later moved to London and studied at the Chelsea Art School before becoming a visiting lecturer and holding one-man exhibitions in London and New York.

In the 1980s, he travelled through the ancient trade route from Turkey to China. It was on his travels that he wrote Danziger’s Travels - an immediate bestseller that he followed with Danziger's Adventures.

Further details and bookings for IMMRAMA can be made by calling +353 58 53803/54975 while special weekend accommodation packages are also available.

Discovery Programme launched at Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre

With the recent controversy and debate raging over the ancient Royal site of Tara, Co. Meath, it would be easy to presume that our Irish heritage is in serious jeopardy.

In Co. Roscommon though, it is alive and well, and being explored with great care.

Cruachan Aí Heritage Centre, situated in the village of Tulsk (on the N5), is delighted to announce the return of the Discovery Programme, Ireland’s archaeological research institute.

From 4th June to 24th August, the team of expert researchers will continue their eye-opening excavations of Tulsk Fort, having re-discovered a mediaeval garrison tower in 2004.

Archaeologist led guided tours will be available during this period, from Monday to Friday. There will be an Open Day on Thursday 26th July, with free access to the dig site and the heritage centre with its permanent exhibitions, exploring one of the most important Celtic Royal sites in Europe – Cruachan or Rathcroghan.

There is also an additional installation to the exhibition - a re-constructed full-sized Celtic Chieftain’s Throne, crafted in ancient Bog Oak and Yew woods by local artist David Patton.
