FEATURED ARTIST
Tom Ovans
I’d wager that not even Tom Ovans himself really knows where the white heat that fuels his music comes from. Given the brilliance of his previous releases, it’s something to say that Party Girl may just be Ovans at his angry best, on it he has adopted a scorched earth policy, picking his subjects and leaving them devastated in his wake. OH SKIES OF GREY is one of those rare musical works that defies any immediate references and transcends the usual genre pigeonholes, prompting listeners to hear Falconberry on her own unique and highly engaging terms. And what you’ll delightfully discover is a “voice [that] is a study in paradox: delicately soft yet powerfully dynamic, warmly inviting yet brazenly defiant, emotive yet wise beyond her years,” as the Austin Chronicle observes. She applies that gift to “thoughtful, beautifully written songcraft,” as the Chronicle puts it, citing her “astounding” songs rich with “achingly intimate narratives” and “brazen, bluesy power,” among their many compelling qualities. But rather than describe, categorize, parse or analyze Falconberry’s musical and lyrical creations, it’s best advised to just listen to oh skies of grey. And simply feel its effects on the heart, mind and soul, as such unfettered expressiveness and emotionality is how she creates music of such power and inescapable allure.

06.24.08 FIRST SCOTT KEMPNER SOLO ALBUM IN 16 YEARS RELEASED TODAY!
SCOTT KEMPNER (EX-DICTATORS, DEL-LORDS) FINISHES FIRST SOLO ALBUM IN 16 YEARS.Saving Grace, due June 24 on 00:02:59, features Dion, Frank Funaro (Del-Lords), Mike Mesaros (Smithereens), Ed Greene and Bob Babbitt (Motown) and Ed Pettersen.
“This is a rock ’n ’roll album . . . if that means anything to anyone anymore,” says Scott Kempner of his forthcoming album Saving Grace (00:02:59, street date June 24, 2008). “It sure means something to me!” Kempner’s rock ’n’ roll career dates back 30 years to his stint as co-founder of The Dictators (when he was known as “Top Ten”) and later the Del-Lords, who in turn inspired the comeback of Dion, with whom Kempner recorded as the Little Kings. That’s a lot to look back on — and Kempner can reminisce with the best of ‘em — but he is squarely focused on the present and the future.
“This album is the first record in my career that I feel 100% about,” says the South Bronx native, who was born the year Elvis Presley recorded his first Sun Records single. “It’s who I am, for better or worse.” The album, his first solo work since 1992’s Tenement Angels (which featured Springfield, Mo.’s mighty Skeletons), includes no other guitarists — Kempner plays all parts. However, he did surround himself with an array of kindred musicians: Del-Lords drummer Frank Funaro, Smithereens bassist Mike Mesaros, Chris and Mike Russo, Chris Amplo, and last but not least Dion, with whom he sings “Heartbeat of Time.” Recorded mainly at Coyote Studios in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg district, Saving Grace was co-produced by Kempner and Mike Caiati.
For two tracks — “Heartbeat of Time” and “Here Come My Love” — Kempner headed to Nashville’s Java Jive to work with producer and friend Ed Pettersen (Song of America) and Bob Olhsson (former Motown engineer). These sessions featured Motown and Nashville session stalwarts Bob Babbitt, bass, and Ed Greene, drums. Kempner ended up with three albums’ worth of material, the best of which he selected for Saving Grace.

01.08.08 IN MEMORY OF DREW GLACKIN 1963-2008 - MEMBER OF TANDY, THE SILOS, ETC, ETC.
We would like to take a moment to thank Drew Glackin for bringing so much happiness, talent and passion to the world. His spirit and his contributions to music will live on forever. Anyone who remembers his contagious smile will know that he would not want us to be sad about his passing... but we are, Drew. When Drew was on stage, he exuded pure joy - and he was on stage a lot. He played in dozens of bands and was the master of dozens of instruments (on the last Tandy release alone, he is credited with playing electric guitar, bass guitar, Hawaiian lap guitar, lap steel, mandolin, mandocello, and singing vocals). Drew was very proud of his work with Tandy. A few months ago, I had a fantastic talk with him at the Lakeside Lounge, and he was telling me how happy he was that I was giving To A Friend a "real" release. "It is better than the White Album," he raved... and I agreed with him.
He is best known for his work with The Silos. We would like to post their message about Drew... they say it best:
It is with greatest sadness that we inform you of the passing of Drew Glackin.
He was unaware of an overactive thyroid condition that led to severe heart damage. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final days and hours and we are all still in a state of shock and disbelief.
Drew was adored around the world and his larger than life spirit and contagious jovial energy touched everyone he met, everywhere he went. He was a musician of the highest talent and made his mark in countless bands, record albums, and many thousands of live performances. He will be sorely missed and the memories of his music, his great humor, and his magnanimous generosity of spirit and love will be with us forever.
A fund will be set up to help his family with expenses and we will keep you informed of memorial concerts and events as they develop.
We will all keep Drew in our hearts,
Konrad, Rod and Walter.
