Make Mine
"Beads" Please

Pam Hawkins

"Size does matter when it comes to a bite of chocolate, the width of a smile, the length of a conversation, and BEADS!"

This is the time of year for changes, such as the shift in the weather from just chilly enough for a light jacket to cold enough for all the winter gear! It's also the time of year when we remember our appreciation for all we have in our lives. It can be a tiny thing, like the smile on your grandchild's face, a piece of pumpkin pie, or that pretty lampwork bead you just got. They don't have to be BIG things to be important in our lives.

Beads happen to be my passion, but all creative endeavors are wondrous to me. In some way, beads filter throughout my life and all the people in it! One of the things I hear MOST is how diversified the bead projects and beady topics are in Bead Unique Magazine. Well, that has been my goal all these years. It was a selfish goal in the beginning, because I wanted more than just beads on my neck and wrist. I wanted them EVERYWHERE! "Ah, but you can't have it all," they told me. I said, "No, but you can have a LOT!" That's where Bead Unique began.

Issue 19 Winter 2009

Winter 2009 cover This issue is very much about bringing creative beading to every part of your holiday season. Play with wire! Use flexible beading wire to weave a necklace, designed by Fran Morris Mandel, that's perfect for your next holiday party. Get creative with metal clay! Learn how to use a mold to design a decorative toggle clasp by Kelly Russell or let Tamara Honaman show you how to use a simple stamp to create your own metal clay charms. Decorate your home! Lucite flowers from The Hole Bead Shoppe adorn a glass ornament, while soldered ornaments by Lisa Bluhm add some heart to your holiday tree.

What have the BUGs (Bead Unique Girls) been up to? See their new collection of earrings, and find out what happened when they were each given the same set of beads to play with.

There is a new chick on the Bead Unique Team! In our new column, The Fashion 411, Laura Timmons gives us the inside scoop on trends in jewelry, fashion, clothing, shoes, accessories, and the color marketplace. (Oh, and she beads too! Check out her stunning, wire-crocheted necklace and earrings set.)
