DNACA's Art In Public Places program presents ~

Solo Exhibit by Linda Yuvan

The Art in Public Places exhibit now up in the courthouse is a one person show by Smith River artist Linda Yuvan titled "Quilting: A Recycler's Art." Six colorful, varied quilts and a "piecing" are on display through Friday, October 31.

The courthouse is open from 8 am to 5 pm on weekdays, excluding national holidays.

Juried Art Competition

Coast Redwoods Art Association's 2008 Juried Art Competition is now hanging at the Crescent Harbor Gallery. The reception for the exhibit is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Saturday (September 6).

The gallery's "winter" hours are 11 am to 4 pm Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 pm on Sunday.

8th Annual Writers' Conference
Friday & Saturday September 12 & 13, 2008

The 8th annual North Coast Redwoods Writers' Conference will be held at the CR - Del Norte campus, as a part of the Community Education Program, and runs from Friday at 5:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Saturday.

The $95 registration fee includes workshops, readings, a panel on publishing, critique sessions for attendees and more.

Three Cescent City residents -- Mary Ann Hague, Stephanie La Torre and Debbie Weist -- along with Hayley McElle of Brookings are featured in "Sirens of the Silver Screen." Artist Laura Wiens had no idea she could paint until April of 2006 when she decided to give it a try. By Christmas of the same year she was selling her work at a Carmel gallery.

Wiens' paintings, as well as the work of other Coast Redwoods Art Association members, are available for viewing and purchase this month at the Crescent Harbor Gallery.

California Arts Day
First Friday in October

"California Imagination" is the theme of the eighth annual California Arts Day on Friday, Oct. 3. Hundreds of artists, educators, performers, organizations, creative professionals and ordinary Californians who value the arts in the state sent the California Arts Council over 300 items and images, which in turn were used by Los Angeles artist Jillian Kogan to create an assemblage resembling the California Bear Flag.

"California Arts Day -- and the days following -- are great times for arts lovers to find special programs for their families, and for parents who don't normally take their children to arts events and venues to take a first step toward making the arts part of their lives," said Muriel Johnson, director of the California Arts Council.

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre's production of "Kitchen Witches," by Caroline Smith, features a woman and her lifelong rival who get cast in the same TV cooking show, brewing up lots of trouble.

Tickets will be available at Del Norte Office Supply and the door. Note there will be a special preview show at 7:30 pm on Thursday, when all tickets will be $8.

Salmon Feed to Benefit Gallery

To support the gallery, Klamath artist Sammy Gensaw will be preparing enough Yurok style barbecued salmon to feed 250 people.

Formed in 2002 in Portland, Oregon, Polaris Dance Theatre creates bold and emotionally resonant works performed by a company of soulful and technically excellent dancers.

Artistic director Robert Guitron's style "is firmly rooted in the technique of Lester Horton, a modern dance pioneer whose big, whole-body movement and quick-shift spirals and rises inflect nearly every scene..." noted The Oregonian.

Monday, November 3 - Friday, January 9

DNACA's 17th Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition is on display in the Del Norte County Courthouse. Award winners include digital photographs "Embracing the Light" (first place) and "Inspiration by Moonlight" (third place) by Carol Schach, and color etching "Summer Aspen" (second place) by Nadine Long. Jurors/judges for the show were Brookings artist Horst Wolf and Gasquet watercolorist Rick Bennett.

The Del Norte Literary Coalition presents a reading by award-winning poet Carol V. Davis in the library at the College of the Redwoods, Del Norte. Davis's most recent book of poems, Into the Arms of Pushkin: Poems of St. Petersburg, received the 2007 T.S. Eliot Prize.

This LRT production of Neil Simon's classic romantic comedy "Barefoot in the Park" stars Tony La Torre and Mary Sullivan, and is directed by Stephanie La Torre.
