Special Events

For the winter of 2008-2009, the Gleason Public Library is very pleased to announce its special programs:

(All of the events are free and open to the public. Unless otherwise noted, these community events will be held in the Hollis Room, Gleason Public Library.)

Cover to Cover: Carlisle's First Community Read

Throughout the month of January, readers in Carlisle will buzz about a single book. The first community read in Carlisle, Cover to Cover, begins in January 2009. The book selected by Carlisleans is The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria, Newsweek correspondent and host of CNN foreign affairs show GPS. All you need to do to participate is pick up a copy of the book, thumb through it, devour it, skim it, listen to it and form an opinion of it. Then consider what your vision of the future is for Carlisle and the global community and talk about it with friends, neighbors, at the library or transfer station, or online at www.gleasonlibrary.org. Click here to request the book from the library catalog, or stop by the library. Read on for more information on this month's events, or visit the library's blog for the latest information and discussion. These events are sponsored by the Friends of the Gleason Public Library.

Cover to Cover: Drop-In Book Discussion

Join friends and neighbors for an informal discussion about the themes of The Post-American World by Fareed Zakaria. Whether part of another book group, curious about other reactions to the book, or looking for a fully entertaining hour of discourse, join us for one of our special Cover to Cover book discussions.

Wednesday, January 14, 7 p.m. Led by Ann Rosas and Heather Hedden
Friday, January 16, 10:30 a.m. Led by Marilyn Harte and Angela Mollet

Book discussions will be held in the Hollis Room on the Third Floor of the Gleason Public Library. No registration for these discussions is required. You can also participate online. Go to GleasonLibrary.org and click on the Cover-to-Cover logo.

Accomplished Veena instrumentalist, Girija Ramapriya, will grace the Gleason Public Library's media area on Friday, January 30 from 3:30-4:30 with a demonstration of her instrument.

The Veena is India's national instrument. It is the oldest and is considered to be the most authentic of all Indian instruments. The origin of the Veena can be traced to India's Vedic period. This instrument allows delicate quartertones and the subtle nuances of a stringed instrument to be played with incredible precision and accuracy.

Girija has been training under Mrs. Durga Krishnan for the past 15 years. An immensely accomplished musician in India and in the US, Mrs. Krishnan has been performing at various venues including Harvard and Tufts Universities and Berklee College of Music and also in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She has been teaching in the Boston area for several decades.

Adult Talk Time at the Gleason Public Library
Tuesdays 10 a.m.-11 a.m.

The Gleason Public Library and Council on Aging are joining forces to promote a weekly drop-in adult talk time at the Gleason Public Library. With budget cuts looming, resources stretched, and yet an increasing request for programs and outlets for gathering in Carlisle, what better way than a simple plan to celebrate and stimulate the sharing of ideas and words at a local venue. We provide the "when" and "where", those attending provide the discussion. This weekly adult social time will take place each Tuesday, starting January 6, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. What will happen? Friends, neighbors, guests, and strangers can sit comfortably in the warm, well-lit library media area on the first floor and converse informally about topics of choice, catch-up on local news, or get acquainted with new townsfolk. This volunteer-led program is our inter-departmental effort to respond to your requests; please tell us if it works. In January, Janet Lovejoy will be the guest moderator. This program is open to anyone.
