Do you trust Gordon Smith?
No other U.S. Senator has so consistently voted for the Iraq War while claiming to oppose it. From 2002 to 2007, Gordon Smith has voted more than 20 times to authorize and fund the Iraq War. The string of his yes votes connects from October 2002 through May 2007.
Less than six months after Smith said in December he could no longer support the conflict, he twice voted to prolong and fund it.
On May 24, 2007, Smith voted in favor of fully funding the Iraq War. Every Democratic representative from Oregon, including U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, voted against that bill.
His decision to continue funding the conflict came eight days after his May 16, 2007 vote against bringing to a vote an amendment that would remove most troops from Iraq by March 31, 2008.
As DPO Executive Director Trent Lutz said,
"Gordon Smith has voted more than 20 times to authorize and fund the Iraq War and launched two media campaigns to convince Oregonians he opposes it. It does not matter how many reporters he talks to nor how slick his quotes are, he can't hide his voting record in support of the Iraq War."
When Smith talks about the war now, do you trust what he says?

How can ANYONE trust anything that this man says vis-a-vis Iraq? His comments last December (that the Iraq war "may be criminal") were nothing but more political posturing. Talk is easy, but actions (in this case, in the form of votes) prove where his allegiance lies.
In December, Smith not only said he could no longer support the conflict, but called it probably "criminal". Yet since then he has voted twice to continue and fund this "criminal" war. Smith has been, and always will be, a two-faced liar and partisan toady when it comes to votes on the Senate floor, while parachuting into the state to pretend to be a "moderate" GOPer in order to get re-elected.
BTW, the phrase "his D.C. votes don't match his Oregon quotes" is a great turn of phrase destined for bumper stickers throughout the state.
Dear Oregonians, Please join with me in voting out Senator Gordon Smith. We need an environmentally friendly senator and one who will get us out of the meatgrinder called Iraq.
Senator Smith's office is grossly unresponsive to me as a
citizen lobbyist. I can't count on him to do anything right.
